Review on Pornography
In line with earlier literature (Peter & Valkenburg, 2011d, pp. 1015–1016), we define pornography as professionally produced or user-generated pictures or videos (clips) intended to sexually arouse the viewer. These videos and pictures typically depict sexual activities, such as masturbation and oral sex, as well as vaginal and anal penetration, in an unconcealed way, often with a close-up on genitals. Most pornography is currently accessed through the Internet, which is reflected in many studies in this review. However, we do not confine this review to Internet pornography to facilitate comparison with and extension of Owens et al.’s (2012) review, which is the most comprehensive review of the topic to date. In the Appendix (in the online supplemental material), we provide information on whether a study dealt with Internet pornography or pornography in other media. By adolescents we mean youth aged 10 to 17 (or samples of adolescents who are on average younger than 18 years of age).
